Location: The AA Centre, Plant, Basing View, Basingstoke, RG21 4HG
Sector: Commercial
Client: Rateavon (working alongside AA)
Project Duration: 6 weeks
Project Overview
We were contacted by Rateavon on a Friday afternoon with a requirement to provide safe roof access at The AA Centre in Basingstoke. As a specialist commercial construction provider operating across the UK and Jersey, Rateavon needed a scaffolding partner who could respond quickly and deliver a fully compliant solution.
Our team mobilised immediately and was on site, ready to begin work by Monday morning. The project involved installing independent scaffolding and edge protection systems to support a new roofing overlay and a liquid waterproofing application.
From the outset, the focus was on delivering a safe, efficient access solution that would allow roofing works to proceed without delay while keeping disruption at the busy commercial site to an absolute minimum.
Scope of Works
AMA Scaffolding successfully delivered a complete access package designed around the building layout and the roofing contractor’s requirements.
The works included:
- Independent scaffolding to provide safe roof access
- Beam work to support the scaffold configuration
- Installation of edge protection guardrails
- System staircases for safe operative access
- Man anchor system to facilitate safe installation works
- Fully designed and compliant affix scaffold system
- Ongoing inspections throughout the project duration
The scaffold was specifically configured to support the application of a liquid waterproof roofing system and associated repair works.
Rapid Mobilisation
One of the standout elements of this project was the speed of response required. After receiving the call from Rateavon on Friday, we immediately began planning, design checks and resource allocation.
By Monday morning, our team was fully mobilised on site and ready to proceed.
This rapid turnaround demonstrated our ability to support commercial contractors working to tight programmes. Early coordination with Rateavon and the AA site team ensured access routes, delivery timings and work zones were all agreed before erection began.
Technical Approach
Affix scaffold system
For this scheme, we implemented a fully designed affix system that met all current compliance standards. This approach provided a secure, stable structure while allowing flexibility in the building’s roof configuration.
The system was engineered to:
- Provide continuous safe access to the roof level
- Support the roofing overlay works
- Maintain full edge protection coverage
- Integrate safely with the building structure
All elements were installed in line with industry guidance and site-specific requirements.
Use of a man anchor system
To safely install the edge protection on the main roof, we utilised a man anchor system. This allowed our operatives to work securely during the installation phase, particularly in exposed roof areas where collective protection was being established.
The man anchor approach ensured:
- Safe working during initial edge protection installation
- Compliance with Work at Height requirements
- Controlled installation in restricted roof zones
- Reduced risk during early-phase works
This method formed a key part of the project’s overall safety strategy.
Health and Safety Management
Safety remained the priority throughout the six-week programme. Working at roof level on an active commercial site required careful planning and strict adherence to best practice.
Our safety measures included:
- Fully designed scaffold solution
- TG20 compliant erection methods
- Use of man anchor systems where required
- Edge protection guardrails installed to the full perimeter
- Regular scaffold inspections and handover checks
- Close coordination with the Rateavon site management
Our experienced scaffold team maintained clear communication on site, ensuring all trades could work safely and efficiently at height.
Programme Delivery
The scaffold installation was carefully phased to align with the roofing contractor’s schedule. Once erected, the system provided reliable access for the application of the new roofing overlay and liquid waterproofing works.
Throughout the six-week period, we remained responsive to site needs, conducting routine inspections and supporting the contractor as works progressed.
Thanks to detailed planning and efficient site management, the project remained on programme from mobilisation through to dismantling.
Outcome
AMA Scaffolding successfully delivered a fully compliant independent scaffolding solution, enabling Rateavon and the AA team to complete the roofing overlay works safely and efficiently.
Project highlights included:
- Rapid mobilisation from Friday instruction to Monday start
- Fully designed and compliant affix scaffold system
- Safe installation using man anchor methods
- Reliable roof access for liquid waterproofing works
- Minimal disruption to the operational commercial site
- Project completed within the planned six-week timeframe
The finished scaffold arrangement provided secure, practical access that supported all phases of the roofing repairs.
