Project Overview
Appointed by Hertfordshire County Council, this project involved the full design and build of a new standalone teaching facility at Belswains Primary School. Delivered under the JCT Design & Build 2016 contract, the scheme aimed to improve the school’s infrastructure and learning environment by replacing temporary structures with a permanent, high-quality teaching block and associated amenities.
Scope of Works
The main component of the project was the construction of a modern, two-storey standalone building comprising eight new classrooms. Built using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), the structure was designed to provide enhanced energy efficiency, fast assembly, and long-term performance.
Complementing the new classroom block, a wide range of external and ancillary works were also carried out to improve the surrounding environment and overall site functionality. These included:
- Construction of a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) pitch to enhance outdoor sports provision for pupils
- Extensive landscaping and hardscaping works across the site
- Installation of a retaining wall structure to manage the change in ground levels
- Construction of a pedestrian bridge providing first-floor access to the new building
- Internal refurbishment and remodelling works to parts of the existing school
- Removal of an outdated temporary classroom block, making way for safer and more permanent solutions
Design Considerations
Led by Ingleton Wood LLP, the architectural and project management elements of the scheme were designed with both education standards and future adaptability in mind. The layout of the classrooms, circulation areas, and access routes was carefully planned to support both the current capacity and future growth. The SIPs construction offered sustainable benefits, reducing on-site waste and speeding up the programme without compromising quality.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the more complex aspects of the build was ensuring minimal disruption to the day-to-day running of the school. With pupils and staff remaining on site throughout, site safety, noise control, and clear communication with the school leadership team were key.
The elevation differences across the site also required strategic planning, particularly in designing the retaining walls and pedestrian access routes. The inclusion of a footbridge linking directly to the first floor not only resolved a logistical challenge but also improved overall site accessibility.
Outcome
The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget, reaching completion in September 2019. The school now benefits from a permanent, well-designed learning environment with significantly improved outdoor facilities and site layout. The new block supports the school’s expanding intake, offers enhanced accessibility, and has created a lasting improvement to the educational environment at Belswains Primary School.
